Kiwia became a prolific Tanzanian inventor after he was inspired by a Guatemalan inventor at an international gathering. YWI first met him in 2011 with his bike-powered cell phone charger, which he designed and produced for Jodie Wu’s Global Cycle Solutions. He invents, teaches and consults for an innovative Land O’ Lakes/USAID Gender Equality program as well. Last January YWI went along to see machines made by four teams in Southern Tanzania. Now, as a villager says, Bernard has “opened their minds,” by coaching 135 of them to create labor saving devices.
